Killer Waves and TBI

Ongoing research sheds light on the effects of “killer waves” following a traumatic brain injury. Also called “brain tsunamis”, the clinical term is cortical spreading depolarizations. What that means and what “killer brain waves” actually do should be the concern of every Kansas City brain injury patient.
At the time of a brain injury, the nerve cells inside the brain become damaged. Imagine the nerves cells inside the brain as a bundle of small batteries that upon impact will begin malfunctioning. The malfunction is like a short circuit effect. These nerves cells are those that absorb the direct effect of the traumatic brain injury.
Nerve cells are interconnected. In a “brain tsunami” the damage effect begins in the point of the actual injury and then spread outward, much like a wave, affecting not just the point of impact but the surrounding brain cells.
This depolarization spreads the brain damage to the surrounding brain cells. Again with the battery analogy, a few dead batteries inside a cluster of batteries will drain the energy inside the surrounding god batteries.
In a British study about 100 brain injury patients were checked for the “brain tsunami” effect. Over 50 percent of the patients experienced the phenomenon. This study illustrates the long term negative effect the waves have on brain injury patients for the first time.
The research shows that the wave effects take place within days after the initial injury, proving for once that the effect of a traumatic brain injury may not be complete directly after the initial incident. The research also shows that the incidence of killer waves is more common than previously thought.
In the future the research may help lead to better treatments and interventions for patients. If the precious time between the initial injury and the crest of the wave can be targeted, interventive treatment may help curb the lasting effect.
