In fact, computers, hair dryers, appliances, cars and thousands of other consumer products are been recalled because of a risk of serious burn injury to the consumers who use them.
There are several types of burns. Burns are classified by depth and the layers of skin that are injured.
First Degree Burns
First-degree burns affect only the skin surface (epidermis). There may be pain, redness and swelling. The skin will appear blanched when light pressure is applied.
Symptoms:
• Redness
• Swelling
• Pain
• Peeling skin
• Shock (pale, clammy skin, weakness, bluish lips and finger nails)
• White or charred skin
Second Degree Burns
Second degree burns often result from exposure to hot or scalding fluids or from flash and flame injuries. These partial thickness burns affect both the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) and some portions of the inner layer (dermis), including sweat glands, and hair follicles. Second degree burns usually show blistering. Because the deeper layers of skin are involved, they require a longer period of time to heal and leave permanent scarring. Second degree burns that extend deep into the dermis may require skin grafting. If a deep second-degree burn is not properly treated, the swelling and decreased blood flow in the tissue can result in the burn becoming a third-degree burn.
Third Degree Burns
Third-degree burns or full thickness burns affect all three layers of the skin: the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. The skin may be charred or a translucent white color. Coagulated blood vessels are often visible just below the skin surface. Because the nerves are burnt, the victim may not feel the burns. However, there is almost always pain from second-degree burns. Healing from third-degree burns is very slow as the skin tissue has been destroyed. Third-degree burns are severe and always require skin grafting. There is extensive scarring. Third degree burns may result from prolonged exposure to flame, chemicals, electricity, scalding liquids or steam.
Fourth Degree Burns
Fourth degree burns are the most serious burns that can be experienced. Fourth degree burns are full thickness burns that affect all layers of the skin as well as structures below the skin, such as tendons, bone, ligaments and muscles. The nerves are destroyed, so there is no pain. Fourth degree burns can be life-threatening and require extensive hospitalization and rehabilitation. The burns usually require surgery or grafting to close the wounds and may require amputation. Fourth degree burns often result in permanent disability and disfigurement. Causes of fourth degree burns include prolonged exposure to flame or electrical injury.
Fires and burn injuries can be devastating both physically and emotionally.
