A Clay County, MO Auto Accident Lawyer Discusses Non-traffic Accident
We all know that cars can be deadly. Whenever we drive there is a risk of injury or death in a traffic accident. But, even a stopped car can be dangerous. Nontraffic accidents refer to injuries and deaths caused by vehicles that are not moving. They include nontraffic crashes and noncrash accidents.
Nontraffic crash: A car crash that occurs out of traffic, including crashes on private roads, crashes in parking lots, crashes in driveways, collisions with pedestrians in driveways, single vehicle accidents that occur somewhere other than highways. These accidents are usually covered by insurance.
Noncrash accidents: Injury causing accidents that involve a car while the car is parked or immobile, but there is no crash. These accidents are rarely covered by insurance.
In 2007, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) started collecting data regarding nontraffic crashes and noncrash accidents. They used police records, death certificates and information from the Not-in-Traffic Surveillance system, a national database of non-traffic accidents. They found:
98,000 injuries occurred from nontraffic crashes.
743,000 injuries from noncrash incidents.
The most common nontraffic accident injuries:
150,000 people injured themselves closing a car door
88,000 were injured by overexertion while loading or unloading cargo or pushing a disabled vehicle.
74,000 were injured by a falling vehicle or vehicle part.
10,000 people were seriously injured when using a jack or other type of hoist.
9,000 burns from radiator and antifreeze fluid
221 deaths from back-over accidents
36 deaths from hypothermia
One third of nontraffic crashes involved pedestrians and bicyclists. Almost half of these accidents occurred at home and another 40 percent occurred in parking lots and driveways. Many of the victims were children who are difficult to see in blind spots. Half of the children injured in backing up accidents were under the age of four.
Remember, accidents that occur while someone is driving will usually be covered by auto insurance, while accidents that happen while the car is parked or immobile will not. However, if the injury is due to negligence or a dangerous product, you may still be able to receive compensation. To learn more, contact a Clay County, MO auto accident lawyer.
