Hip Implants Recalled: Find Out If You Are Affected.

In August 2010, Johnson & Johnson recalled hip implant issued a voluntary of the DePuy ASR Hip System, also known as the ASR XL Acetabular System, and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System. The recall came after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received more than 500 complaints about these defective implants.

There are two major causes for the hip implant recall:

1. A high failure rate
2. Metal toxicity

High Failure Rate

The ASR XL Acetabular System has a failure rate of 12 percent. Symptoms of hip failure include swelling, pain and difficulty walking. In some cases there are no symptoms until the hip fails. The high failure rate means that thousands of hip implant patients have had to undergo a second hip replacement procedure, known as a revision surgery. Revision surgery is expensive. The revision surgery takes longer than the original hip replacement and has a higher risk of complications than the original hip replacement surgery. Recovery time takes longer and patients may experience quite a bit of pain.

Metal Toxicity

The ASR Hip Resurfacing System and the ASR XL Acetabular System are metal-on-metal monoblock devices made of chromium and cobalt. When the hip is used, the metal surfaces rub together creating a metal debris. This debris can enter the blood stream. Chromium and cobalt are toxic metals which can cause severe injury to internal organs as well as brain injury.

Symptoms of metal toxicity

• Mental confusion
• Sense of unreality
• Distorted perception,
• Pain in muscles and joints
• Headaches
• Short-term memory loss
• Food intolerances/allergies
• Vision problems
• Chronic fatigue,
• Candida and other fungal infestation
• Skin damage
• Kidney damage
• Gastrointestinal disturbances
• Tinnitus
• Neuropathy
• Respiratory diseases
• Bronchial hyperreactivity
• Thyroid dysfunction
• Cardiomyopathy
• Kidney toxicity
• Other symptoms

If you have been injured by the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System, the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System or the DePuy Pinnacle Acetabular Cup System (a third metal-on-metal hip replacement system that has not been recalled), you have the right to file a personal injury claim for damages to cover your medical costs, lost wages, disability and pain and suffering. A Kansas City defective medical device attorney can help you determine if you have a Missouri personal injury claim.
