Are Female Drivers At Higher Risk of Injury In Missouri Car Crashes?

Are you a woman who has been injured in a car accident in Warrensburg, MO? Did the male driver of the other vehicle walk away without an injury? The safety features in your car may be to blame.

If you are a woman, your odds of being seriously injured in a Missouri auto accident are 47 percent higher than they are for a man.

For many years, researchers have noticed that women are more likely than men to report injuries after a Missouri car crash. Previous studies have focused on the way men and women drive as an explanation for the difference in injury rates. However, a new study has found that women may be more likely to sustain serious injuries in a Missouri traffic accident because most car safety features are designed to protect men rather than women.

Dipan Bose and Jeff Crandall of the University of Virginia and Maria Segui-Gomez of Navarra University in Spain analyzed ten years' worth of data about US motor vehicle accidents. The results were published in the American Journal of Public Health.

The researchers attribute the difference in injury rates to the design of safety features. Seat belts, head rests, and air bags are designed to protect an average size man. However, women tend to be shorter, putting them at a higher risk of injury to the lower extremities.

Women are not just smaller than men, they are also less muscular. A head rest that provides enough protection for a man may not safeguard women with smaller necks from whiplash and other neck injuries.

The researchers suggest that auto manufacturers consider female drivers when designing safety features. They also recommend that public health policies and vehicle regulations be changed to take into account safety for women as well as men.
