Happy Halloween! Are your children excited about pumpkin carving, cool costumes, trick-or-treating and lots of candy? Halloween is a special time of year, but it is also a dangerous holiday. Every Halloween, hundreds of children are injured in Missouri car accidents, slips and falls, and fires.
Keep your Halloween happy, not scary. Share these safety tips with your children:
Costumes:
• To avoid fire hazards, choose tight fitting or flame retardant costumes.
• If your child’s costume is too long, hem it so she does not trip and fall.
• Check your child’s costume for loose strings and other items that can caught and pose a strangulation risk.
• Make sure the costume does not impact your child’s ability to see what is going on around her. Choose face paints instead masks that can obstruct your child’s view.
• Avoid costumes with dark colors. Look for costumes with reflective features.
Trick-or-Treating
• Children should be accompanied by an adult when they trick-or-treat, especially if they must cross streets. Never let your child go from house-to-house alone.
• Only go to homes that are lit
• Do not go to the homes of strangers.
• Do not let your child enter a house.
• Do not allow your children to eat candy before they get home, and check all candy at home before they open it.
• Two-thirds of Halloween injuries are alcohol related. Go trick or treating early inorder to avoid drunk drivers.
• Make sure you are visible; have every child carry a flashlight.
• Follow safe pedestrian rules: look both ways before crossing the street and cross only at crosswalks and corners.
• Remind kids to walk rather than run so they don't fall, and to walk only on sidewalks and driveways.
• Teach children their name, address and phone number in case they are lost. Remind them to only give this information to a police officer.
• Do not approach strange animals.
• Carry a cell phone in case you need help
Fire Injuries
• Use colored lights to decorate instead of candles.
• Avoid loose fitting costumes.
• Teach your kids to avoid playing around jack-o-lanterns that are lit.
Have a happy and safe Halloween.
