First of all, don't panic. Smoke doesn't always mean fire, but it does mean something is wrong. If you see smoke or steam or smell an unusual odor, pull over and stop the car. If you continue driving, the movement of the car will add air to the possible fire. Adding air causes fires to grow.
If possible, look for a place to stop that is away from other people, cars and buildings. This will help keep bystanders safe.
Get yourself and all passengers out of the car.
Move away from the vehicle and call for help.
In general we don't advise people to put out car fires on their own. However, everyone should carry a fire extinguisher in their glove box. Get one that is rated ABC for all types of fires.
You can try using the extinguisher if the fire is small and it is located in the interior of the car. You can also try smothering the fire by closing all the doors and windows.
If the smoke is coming from under the hood, you can try popping the release for the hood without opening it. Stand away from the vehicle and aim the extinguisher through the small gap where the hood has been popped.
If the smoke is coming from the rear of the car near the gas tank, get away from the car. Call for help and let the 911 operator know that you are dealing with a potential car fire.
