Workers CompensationHerniated Disk Treatment Options
Herniated disk injuries can be a major hindrance when it comes to performing daily tasks as well as for causing significant discomfort that can influence just about every movement you make when going through your daily routine. While some people with this condition will heal naturally and without extensive treatment, depending on its severity and other factors, it is recommended that you consult your doctor or a pain specialist to determine the proper treatment for you. If you are having back or spinal issues, some of the treatment options that may be appropriate are as follows:
Decreased Activity
Decreased activity may be one of the first steps recommended by physicians and it may include several days of bed rest on a firm surface.
Pain Medications
Pain medication may be prescribed to in an effort to help ease the pain and discomfort of a herniated disk. Make sure to carefully follow your doctor’s specific instructions as to how much and whe
n to take your prescription. These may include the following:
Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
Neuropathic pain medications
Tricyclic antidepressants
Muscle relaxants
Corticosteroids
Narcotics
Cold or Heat Therapy
Bracing
Your doctor may prescribe a brace that you will wear for a period of time. While wearing a brace can have many pain relieving benefits, doctors may advise that wearing it for an extended period of time may actually weaken your muscles and cause reliance on the brace or other problems to occur.
Physical Therapy
It may be recommended that you do various exercises or make appointments with a physical therapist in an effort to return to restore your health after your injury occurs. This also includes a form of therapy called hydrotherapy, which involves various exercises while partially submerged in water to help with muscle relaxation.
Electrical Stimulation
"Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation" (TENS) delivers a tiny electrical current to key points on a nerve pathway. The current, delivered through electrodes taped to your skin, isn't painful or harmful. It's not known exactly how TENS works, but it's thought that it might relieve pain by stimulating the release of pain-inhibiting molecules (endorphins) or blocking pain fibers that carry pain impulses. Scientific literature doesn't provide strong evidence that TENS is effective at reducing low back pain when used as the only treatment. However, your doctor may use TENS in conjunction with other treatments.
Various Surgical Treatments
In some cases, your doctor may advise that surgical treatments may be the best solution. Before resorting to this more invasive treatment a thorough discussion with your doctor is in order.
