All pregnant mothers worry about the safety of their unborn child. They carefully monitor the food that they eat and the chemicals they are exposed to. But, did you know that car crashes are the leading cause of death and serious trauma during pregnancy.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 32,800 pregnant women are involved in car accidents every year. If you are pregnant, a car accident threatens both your own safety and the safety of your unborn child.
Here are five safety tips from the Independence, MO auto accident lawyers at Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys to help you and your baby stay safe on the road.
1. Always wear a seat belt. This is important for everyone - pregnant or not. A seat belt is your best protection from serious car crash injury. It may be the only things that will save you and your baby in the event of a Missouri car crash.
Wear your seatbelt so the shoulder strap fits comfortable across your chest and the lap portion is resting under your baby bump. Never cross it over or above your belly as this may cause injury in a sudden stop.
2. If possible, be a passenger. As your pregnancy progresses, your uterus gets closer and closer to the steering wheel. In late pregnancy, your uterus may be in a position where it could be crushed in a car accident.
3. If you must drive, sit as far away from the steering wheel as possible while still being able to drive safely. You may have to tilt your seat back to get the extra space. Allow at least 10 inches between your body and the airbag and tilt the steering wheel towards your breastbone rather than your abdomen.
4. If you are driving for a long distance, take regular breaks. This helps with circulation and it will keep you from getting too uncomfortable.
5. Eat before driving. If you are pregnant, going without eating can cause your blood sugar to plummet. This can cause lightheadedness, dizziness, fainting, confusion or disorientation. And, while you are eating, have a glass of water. Pregnancy can increase the chance of dehydration.
Congratulations on your pregnancy. We wish you safe driving.
