Aggressive driving is a growing problem. Because of the tough economy, many people are working longer hours and commuting longer distances. Drivers are stressed and in a hurry to get home.
What is aggressive driving?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines aggressive driving as “driving actions that markedly exceed the norms of safe driving behavior and that directly affect other road users by placing them in unnecessary danger.” Aggressive driving behaviors include:
• Tailgating or improper following • Weaving in and out of traffic, erratic lane changes • Illegal driving on road shoulder, sidewalk, ditch or median • Failure to yield right of way • Illegal passing, passing on wrong side, passing school busses • Preventing other drives from passing • Speeding or suddenly changing speeds • Racing • Running stop signs or red lights • Failure to signal • Disobeying traffic signals, signs or devices • Failure to observe safety zone traffic laws
How much of a problem is aggressive driving?
About 56% of car crashes involve one of the “aggressive actions” listed above. Speeding is a contributing factor in one-third of all crashes.
In a 2002 survey conducted by Pew Charitable Trusts, 58 percent of drivers claimed that they often see “drivers who are aggressive and reckless.”
In 2005, The Washington Post did a survey of American drivers. They asked drivers, “What most endangers your own safety on the road?” Thirty-two percent of those surveyed said that aggressive drives were the biggest threat to their safety. In this survey, aggressive driving tied with drunken driving as the perceived greatest threat to road safety.
More recently, 78% of respondents to a 2008 AAA Foundation survey rated aggressive drivers as a serious or extremely serious traffic safety problem. However, most of these drivers also admitted to aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding, honking, tail gating and pressuring other drivers to speed up.
