Preventing Missouri Road Rage Part 1

Driving down the road can be a dangerous game. Car accidents are not the only threats to drivers and their passengers; road rage is a very real danger on Kansas City roadways.

Road rage is aggressive behavior by one driver towards another, usually this behavior takes extreme forms. Physical assault, vehicular assault, or even assault with a weapon are the most dangerous manifestations of the driver's rage. What causes road rage? This is a very good question that has plagued law enforcement officers and lawmakers as they search to find ways to combat the potentially deadly outcomes of the phenomenon. Traffic congestion, tailgating drivers, aggressive acts of driving, and road construction are thought to be triggers for the aggression that turns into road rage. It is also widely accepted that drivers with road rage are often highly agitated prior to getting behind the wheel. The frustration of a driving related mishap seems to trigger an episode of road rage. Drivers who feel wronged by another driver may go as far as to chase the offending motorist down, in an effort to "have it out" or to be heard. Frustrations mount and target this one bad situation, and the turnout is rarely good. Aggressive acts by other drivers can seem extremely personal, and therein cause a burning need for an agitated motorist to make a point. What can you do to combat the effects of road rage? As a driver, be sensitive to your own mood and triggers. Do not get behind the wheel when you are angry. Take the time to calm down and reduce stress before you get behind the wheel of a car. 1. Make sure your car is in good working order. Overheated radiators or broken fan belts on the interstate can exacerbate feelings of agitation. 2. Watch overdoing caffeine and other substances that can leave you feeling irritable. 3. Do not drive when you are too tired and sleepy to be safe on the road. 4. If you know you are going to be driving when traffic is heavy, make yourself mentally prepared for it. Anticipate the stress and prepare by bringing along relaxing music or books on tape that will help you stay calm in stop and go traffic. 5. Breathe deeply. Even if another driver is behaving like an idiot, check yourself before you react. Count to ten or higher. Pull off the road, take a break, do whatever it takes to cool off. Do not let the inconsiderate actions of another person get the better of you. 6. Do not carry weapons in your car. 7. Safely get away from other drivers who are exhibiting aggressive behavior. Laugh off obscene gestures and stay out of the way of other drivers who seem determined to turn the road way into a demolition course. If the actions of another driver seems overly aggressive, go somewhere safe and call police. Lives are lost each year by enraged drivers. If you or a loved one have been injured by the aggressive actions of another driver, you owe it to yourself to find out your rights. Contact a Missouri personal injury lawyer for information.
