To determine the rating, IIHS rates vehicles good, acceptable, marginal, or poor based on their performance in high-speed front and side crash tests and a rollover test. The cars are also evaluated for how well the seat and head restraints offer protection against neck injuries in rear impact crashes.

To earn a Top Safety Award, a vehicle must have good ratings in all four categories. Vehicles must also offer electronic stability control and other standard safety features that reduce crash risk.
