Significant Increase in 2010 Kansas Drunk Driving Fatalities Despite Nationwide Decrease in DUI Deaths
“Stunningly bad” is how U.S. Representative Pat Colloton described the latest Kansas drunk driving statistics. According to the information released by the government:
- Drunk driving accident fatalities decreased about 5% nationwide but increased in Kansas.
- Kansas saw the second largest increase in drunk driving deaths, behind only the state of New York.
- 168 people died in 2010 Kansas drunk driving accidents. That is 46 more fatalities that occurred because of 2009 Kansas drunk driving accidents.
- 40% of Kansas highway accident fatalities occurred because of drunk driving in 2010.
Before these statistics were released, Kansas lawmakers recognized the problem of drunk driving in the state and took action. In 2011 a new law was passed to require even first time DUI offenders to have ignition interlock systems installed on their vehicles. That combined with other state activities to discourage and prevent drunk driving led Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to award the state its highest rating, a full 5 stars for its efforts to curb drunk driving.
