Does your child have Cerebral Palsy as a result of birth injuries? You may have a malpractice case. Contact the Kansas City medical malpractice attorneys to learn more.

Cerebral palsy is a term that includes a group of permanent disorders that affect the development of movement and posture. Depending on the severity, cerebral palsy may affect movement, learning, hearing, seeing and thinking. Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the motor control centers of the brain during pregnancy, during childbirth or after birth and before the age of about three.

Symptoms of cerebral palsy may not noticeable at birth, but they are usually seen before a child is two and sometimes as early as three months. Warning signs of cerebral palsy include poor coordination, stiff muscles, unusual posture, involuntary movement and delay in smiling or movement. Parents may notice delays in reaching, sitting, rolling, crawling and walking.

As the child grows, symptoms may include:

Muscles that are very tight and don’t stretch and may continue to tighten over time.
An abnormal walk
Joint contracture – joints are very tight and do not open all the way
Muscle weakness
Paralysis or loss of movement in groups of muscles

Symptoms may include one arm, one leg, one side of the body, both legs, or both arms and both legs.

There is no cure for cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is a serious disability that requires special on-going medical care and occupational, physical and speech therapy. The costs of treatment and accommodation can be financially devastating for a family.

Cerebral palsy may be caused by the negligence of a doctor or hospital staff during labor and delivery. If your child’s cerebral palsy is the result of medical malpractice, you may be eligible for compensation for the following damages:

Past and future medical expenses
Past and future therapy expenses
Costs for the special needs of your child, including accommodations for disability
Emotional distress
Loss of earning capacity
Lost wages

If you believe the delivering doctor or midwife is responsible for your child’s cerebral palsy, contact Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys immediately. Our child injury and medical malpractice attorneys can determine if you have a case and we can help you get the compensation that you and your child deserve.
