Top Five Causes of TBI:

1. Falls: Any sudden blow to the head can cause a TBI; however, falls are the leading cause of TBI among all age groups. More than one-third (35.2%) of TBI’s are the result of falls. Falls are responsible for half of TBI among children under 14 and 60.7% of TBI in adults aged 65 or older.

2. Car accidents: The second leading cause of TBI is traffic wrecks. Motor vehicle accidents account for 17.3% of TBI’s. TBI sustained in a motor vehicle accident is often very serious. About one-third (31.8%) of TBI deaths are the result of motor vehicle crashes.

3. Struck-by / against accident: Struck-by / against accidents refer to incidents where the victim collides or is bumped by a moving or stationary object. Examples of these types of accidents include falling boxes, being hit by construction equipment, or bumping into a low hanging object. These types of accidents account for 16.5% of TBI and 24.8% of TBI in children.

4. Assault: Assault accounts for 10% of TBI.
