What Is Acquired Brain Injury?

An Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is brain damage that is caused by events after a person’s birth, rather than being caused by a genetic or congenital disorder.

There are two types of acquired brain injuries:

1. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
2. Non-traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic Brain injury is usually caused by physical trauma to the brain due to car accidents, slips and falls, workplace accidents, violent assaults or other external sources.

Non-traumatic injury can come from either an internal source such as a brain tumor or stroke, or from an external source such as poisoning or an accident that deprives the brain of oxygen such as medical errors or drowning.

Brain Injury of both types may effect a person’s cognitive (thinking), physical, emotional, social or independent functioning. Even a mild injury can result in a serious disability that interferes with a person’s daily life and activities.

Acquired Brain Injury is not an intellectual disability. People with a brain injury may have difficulty controlling, coordinating and communicating their thoughts and actions, but they retain their intellectual abilities. However, effects of the brain injury can make it difficult for victims to express themselves in a way that is intelligible to others. This can be very frustrating.

Causes of acquired brain injury can include, but are not limited to:

• Airway obstruction that is caused by near-drowning, throat swelling, choking, strangulation, or crush injuries to the chest
• Electrical shock or lightning strike
• Trauma to the head and/or neck from a car crash, violent attack or slip and fall accident
• Shock
• Vascular Disruption
• Heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases
• Infectious disease, such as meningitis, some venereal diseases, AIDS, and insect-carried diseases,
• Brain tumors
• Metabolic disorders
• Poisons or poisonous gasses

Brain injury is the leading cause of death and disability in persons under 45 years old.

When brain injury is caused by the negligence or recklessness of another, victims of brain injury may sue those who caused their injury in order to recover damages for their medical care, therapy, loss of income and other accident- or disability-related expenses.
