Missouri Car Crash Ankle Injuries, Part 1: Do You Have a Broken Ankle?

Did you know that car crashes are one of the most common causes of broken ankles? However, unlike the broken ankles sustained in sports accidents or slip and falls, broken ankles sustained in Missouri car accidents often involve crushing of the bone and require surgical repair. Many people mistake broken ankles for sprains or strains, as many of the signs and symptoms of injury are the same. Our Kansas City car accident attorneys advise that you see a doctor after any Missouri car crash. Mention any pain in your ankle or foot.

Signs and symptoms of broken ankles:
If you have a broken ankle, you may experience the following signs and symptoms:

  • Immediate, throbbing pain
  • Pain that increases with activity and lessens with rest
  • Swelling
  • Bruising or discoloration
  • Severe tenderness
  • Difficulty in walking or bearing weight
  • Difficulty moving the ankle

You should seek immediate medical care if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • The bone has pierced your skin and is exposed to the air
  • Your ankle looks deformed or misshapen
  • You cannot put any weight on the ankle
  • Over-the-counter pain medications don't relieve the pain
  • You cannot move your toes
  • You are unable to move your ankle at all
  • You ankle or foot is numb
  • Your foot is cold or blue

You should make an appointment to see a doctor if pain and swelling in your ankle last for more than a few days, or if the pain interferes with walking. In the meantime, take the following precautions:

  • Stay off your ankle so you don't aggravate the injury
  • Avoid moving your foot and ankle
  • Elevate your foot and ankle above heart level.
  • To reduce swelling, apply ice to the area for 20 minutes at a time. Make sure to take a break of 45 to 60 minutes between icings.
  • Wrap the injured ankle in an elastic or ACE bandage.
  • Take an over-the-counter pain medication like acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve).
