Missouri Car Crash Injuries: Spinal Fractures Part 3, Rotational Fractures

Some serious Missouri car crash injuries are very obvious. There is deformation, bleeding, loss of consciousness, or other signs of trauma. Examples include open head injuries, leg fractures, crushed bones, and amputations. When these types of car crash injuries occur, it is important to assume that there are also hidden, less obvious injuries - especially after a high-speed car crash.

Spinal fractures often occur in combination with other serious injuries. Sometimes they are not diagnosed until after the more obvious injuries have begun to heal. Unfortunately, late diagnosis can reduce the chances of a complete recovery.

Rotation Fractures
Rotation fractures occur when the high energy impact of a Kansas City car accident causes the spine to suddenly rotate. There are two subcategories of rotational fractures.

1. Transverse process fracture
2. Fracture-dislocation

Transverse process fractures are very rare. They are caused when the body is suddenly bent to the side. These fractures are usually stable and are treated with a back brace or cast.

Fracture-dislocations are more common. These fractures result when the spine is forcefully rotated and a vertebra is moved from its position on top of the adjacent vertebra. These injuries are very serious. The twisting often causes intense spinal cord compression that results in paralysis. If the spinal cord is seriously damaged, the victim may become permanently disabled.

After a fracture-dislocation, the spine must be stabilized to prevent further damage. This is done with surgery. However, if there are other life-threatening injuries, surgery may be delayed. Whether or not a full recovery is expected, the accident victim will require extensive physical therapy and rehabilitation.
