Sleep Apnea Increases the Risk of Serious Car Crashes: Learn More.
Do you have sleep apnea? According to a Canadian researchers, this sleep disorder doubles a person's risk of being involved in a car crash and it increases the risk of a serious car crash involving personal injury by three to five times.
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that is characterized by pauses in breathing or low breathing rates during sleep. The difficulty breathing may be caused by an obstruction or it may be that the body forgets to breathe while asleep. In either case, the pause in breathing, or apnea, causes the brain to wake up in order to resume breathing. Apneas may occur hundreds of times over the course of the night, leading to chronic drowsiness during the day. Men are much more likely to experience sleep apnea than women, but both men and women who have sleep apnea are at equal risk of being in a car accident.
This was not the first study to find a link between sleep apnea and increased risk for car crashes; however, this is the largest study of its kind and is first study to examine the severity of crashes among drivers with sleep apnea.
The researchers studied nearly 1,600 people including patients with and without sleep apnea. The researchers were startled to find that even patients with mild sleep apnea were at an increased risk of being involved in a car accident.
