Injuries to the Extremities: Arm and Leg Injuries
Fractures or broken bones – A fracture occurs when a bone is broken by the force of an impact. Many broken bones require orthopedic treatment and may have to be immobilized in a cast until they heal. Sometimes broken bones require surgery. Victims may also need physical therapy in order to regain strength and movement once the bone heals.
Knee damage – there are many types of knee damage that can occur in an accident. Symptoms of knee damage may include pain, swelling and difficulty bearing weight. A serious knee injury can cause pain and mobility problems for the rest of the victim’s life. Treatment may include rest, icing, physical therapy and surgery.
Torn Rotator Cuffs – A torn rotator cuff occurs when the upper arm joint is suddenly jarred. Symptoms of torn rotator cuffs include pain and weakness in the arm. Treatment includes rest, anti-inflammatory drugs, medication, physical therapy, and surgery.
Psychological Injuries: PTSD
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) – Post-traumatic stress disorder is common in all victims of trauma; car crash victims are no exception. Symptoms of PTSD after a Kansas City car crash may include flashbacks, anxiety, mood changes, lack of interest in normal activities, and avoidance of family and friends. Although these symptoms can occur immediately after the event they can also occur up to a year later. Victims need psychological treatment and may require medication.
