Back To School In Kansas City: Does Your Family Have A Missouri Car Accident Emergency Plan?

School has started. You've probably discussed school bus safety or pedestrian safety with your child. You've filled out your school emergency card in case your child is injured or gets sick at school. But, do you have a plan if you should be injured in a Missouri car accident during school hours?

If you are injured in a Kansas City car accident:
  • Who will pick up your child from school?
  • Where will your child stay?
  • Who will take care of your child if you must stay in the hospital for a long period of time?
  • Who will comfort your child?

If you don't make any plans, the school may have to leave your child with social services. What a scary situation for a child who is already worried about an injured parent. Our Kansas City car crash lawyers suggest creating an emergency plan.

How to create an emergency plan:

1. Legally name one or more short-term guardians for your children. A short-term guardian is someone who has your legal permission to care for your child on a temporary basis until you are well, the other parent arrives, or the long-term guardian that you appoint can be found. Choose someone who lives nearby and who your children know well. If possible, pick someone who would be comforting in an emergency.

2. List your short-term guardians on your school emergency card. The school emergency card should include your babysitter or any friends or neighbors who can pick your child up if he or she is sick and you cannot be reached. But, it should also have the names of your short-term guardians.

3. If you use a regular babysitter or after school program, make sure your childcare provider knows who to call if you do not arrive as scheduled. Provide detailed instructions, so the childcare provider doesn't need to call the police. Again, if the police are called, your children could end up with social services until a long term caregiver arrives.

These three easy steps can make a big difference for a scared child.
