Keep Your Child Safe This Summer With These Kansas City Bike Safety Tips

For many children, summer vacation means long days and evenings spent on their bikes. During the summer, the risk of your child being injured in a Kansas City bicycle crash increases. If your child is going to be riding a bike this summer, consider these facts:
  • An average of 99 children are killed and 254,000 children are injured in bicycle accidents each year.
  • 54 percent of child bicyclist deaths occur from May to September.
  • About 630 children are injured each day in bicycle-related crashes.
  • In 2009, 11.9 percent of children injured on bicycles were under age 4 and 36.7 percent were 5 to 9 years of age.
  • More children ages 5 to 14 are seen in hospital emergency rooms for injuries related to bicycling than any other sport.
  • 90 percent of bicycle deaths involve collisions with cars.
  • Most car-bicycle rashes occur less than one mile from the child's home.
  • 54.2 percent of children aged 14 and under were killed while bicycling on minor connecting roads and in neighborhoods
  • 64 percent of motor-vehicle related bicycle deaths occur between 2-8 p.m.
  • Bicycle accidents represent 2 percent of all traffic crashes.
  • One-seventh of fatal bicycle crashes involve a bicyclists age 14 and younger.

More than 27 million American children ride bikes. Bicycling can be dangerous, but riding a bike is an important part of childhood. It is important that children learn to ride safely. The most important thing a child can do to prevent bicycle accident injury is to ALWAYS wear a helmet.

Nearly half of children who are hospitalized after a bicycle accident sustain a head injury. Wearing a bicycle helmet reduces the risk of head injury by 85 percent and the risk of severe brain injury by 88 percent. Bicycle helmets can prevent 52 to 60 percent of bike-related head injury deaths.

Other bicycle safety rules:

1. Make sure the bike fits your child. Children who ride a bike that is too large or too small are more likely to be injured in a bicycle crash.

2. If your child rides at dusk or after dark, make sure his bike has lights and reflectors and that he wears light-colored or reflective clothing.

3. During the day, dress your child in bright colors so she can be seen.

4. Children under 10 should not ride in traffic. Children who ride on the street, should follow the rules of the road.

- always ride on the right side of the road in the same direction as traffic
- use appropriate hand signals to indicate turns and stops
- stop for all stop signs and stop lights
- look both ways before entering a street
