More than half of pediatricians admit to frequent wrongful diagnoses. Is your child at risk?

A new survey shows that more than half of American pediatricians admit to making frequent diagnostic errors.

The study was conducted by the National Institutes of Health. The results were published in the June 21, 2010 issue of the professional journal Pediatrics.

The researchers sent surveys to 1,362 pediatricians in Houston, Texas and Cincinnati, Ohio. The surveys included 25 questions that focused on frequency and potential harm of errors relating to medications, surgery and other clinical activity. Doctors were responsible for filling out their own surveys. The results may surprise you.

54% of pediatricians surveyed admitted to making a diagnostic error at least once a month.

However, most of these mistakes were not harmful.

45% of pediatricians surveyed admitted to making an error that harmed patients once or twice a year.
4% of pediatricians surveyed admitted to making an error that harmed patients once or twice a month.

Most frequent misdiagnoses included:

1. Diagnosing viral illness as bacterial illness
2. Misdiagnosis of medication side effects
3. Misdiagnosis of psychiatric disorders
4. Misdiagnosing appendicitis
5. Mistaking asthma for ear infections

Reasons for misdiagnoses:

1. Failure to gather enough information (patient history, chart review)
2. Patients waiting too long to seek treatment
3. Failure to follow up on lab tests
4. Failure of parents to follow care instructions

Contributing factors to misdiagnoses:

1. System-related errors, organizational issues and communication problems
2. Inadequate care coordination, poor teamwork, and poor communication among medical professionals

Doctors believe that many of these problems could be avoided with computerized medical records and better follow-up.

You can help protect your own child by being actively involved in your child’s care. Let doctors know about all medications that your child is taking and any on-going health problems that your child has. Follow all instructions and finish all prescriptions as directed. If something seems wrong, speak up and ask questions.
