Kansas City's Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys offers tips to prevent child injury: keep your baby safe on hot days.

Every year 37 babies and toddlers (about one a week from spring to fall) die when they are accidentally left strapped in a car seat or become trapped in a vehicle on a hot day. Many of these tragic child injury accidents occur when a change in schedule causes the parent or care giver to forget about the child in the back seat.

Babies and toddlers are not able to regulate their body temperatures in the same way as an adult. In a car, windows create a greenhouse effect. In as little as half an hour, the temperature inside the vehicle can be as much as 35 degrees more than the temperature outside. Even in cold weather, over-bundled babies can become overheated. Doctors say that a baby left in a car on a 75 degree day can die of hyperthermia (overheating) in as little as fifteen minutes.

Many times these accidents occur to good parents who are exhausted and just had a change of routine. At other times, they are due to a negligent child care provider who isn't aware of the danger a hot car can pose.

The Kansas City child injury attorneys at Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys hope these tips help you to keep your child safe:

1. Make it clear to baby sitters, spouses and grandparents that the baby is never to be left in the car while the car is stopped - not even for a minute.

2. Keep your purse, briefcase, wallet, cell phone, and other necessities on the floor next to your baby’s seat. You will see your child when you go to grab your purse.

3. Seat your youngest child behind the passenger seat. He is more likely to catch your eye in that seat. Babies most often are forgotten when their car seat is placed behind the driver’s seat.

4. Keep a teddy bear or other stuffed animal in the car seat whenever it is empty. When you put your baby in the seat, put the stuffed animal in the front passenger seat. This will be a visual reminder that your baby is in the car.

5. Make a habit of always checking the back seat after parking – whether or not your child is in the car.

6. Ask your child care provider to call you anytime your child is not dropped off at the normal time.

7. Never assume that your spouse has taken the baby out. Always check and make sure you know where the baby is before closing the car door.

8. If you tend to be forgetful, you can buy a device that sounds an alarm if the baby is left in the car seat after the car is stopped. The ChildMinder System retails for $69.95.
