Almost 500 children die each year from accidental injury in Kansas and Missouri. How does this happen?

Accidental injuries from traffic, burns, drowning, falls, and poisoning are the leading cause of death and disability for American children up to age of 19. Every year, more than 12,000 children die from accidental injuries. Another 9.2 million children visit the emergency room.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) compiles information about child injury. These statistics are based on the period from 2000-2006.

· In the United States, an average of 12,175 children between the ages of 0 and 19 die each year from accidental injury. In Kansas, about of 154 children die each year of unintentional injuries. In Missouri, there are about 334 deaths.

· The national unintentional injury child injury death rate is 15.0 per 100,000 children. In Kansas, the unintentional injury death rate is 19.5 per 100,000 children. In Missouri, it is 21.2 deaths per 100,000 children.

· In Kansas children aged 15 to 19 years had the highest death rate (41.9 per 100,000 children). In Missouri, the highest death rates were for children aged 15 to 19 years (47.8 per 100,000 children) and for infants under one year of age (44.4 per 100,000 children).

· Nationwide, approximately 9.2 million children a year are taken to emergency rooms for treatment of accidental injuries.

· In children over one year of age, males are more likely to sustain accidental injury.

· Rates of injury for children under one year of age are about equal for males and females.

· More male children sustained fatal injuries. The accidental injury death rate for males was almost twice the death rate for females.

· Motor vehicle accidents were the leading cause of accidental injury death.

· Most motor vehicle deaths involved children who were passengers in a moving vehicle.

· Motor vehicles were also responsible for child cyclist and pedestrian deaths.

· For infants less than one year old, suffocation was the leading cause of accidental dath.

· For children ages one to four, drowning was the leading cause of death.

· For children ages five to 19, car crashes were the leading cause of death.

· Falls were the leading cause of non-fatal accidental injury.

When you entrust your child to the care of a babysitter, after school program or child care center, you expect that they will take reasonable precautions to your child safe from common childhood injuries. You expect them to drive safely and use the proper child safety seat. You expect that poisons, medications, cleaners and other chemicals are kept locked up and out of the reach of children. You expect that swimming pools will be fenced and that your child will be adequately supervised at all times.

When a child care provider does not take reasonable precautions to keep your child safe, they are acting negligently. If your child is injured or killed because of an injury sustained due to the child care provider’s negligence, you have rights.
