High Kansas City summer temperatures may cause child heat injury: Can heat stroke be prevented?

If your child is in a sports camp or an outdoor day camp this summer, they may be especially at risk of heat injury, especially when the temperatures rise above 90 degrees.

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious, life-threatening injuries that require immediate medical attention. Serious heat injuries are the leading cause of sports related deaths, particularly for children.

You can prevent heat injury death by learning the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke:

Signs of heat exhaustion:

Body temperature over 101 degrees
Headache
Nausea
Dizziness
Fainting

Signs of heat stroke:

Body temperature rises over 104 degrees
Altered mental status
Victim may be sweating profusely (exertional heat exhaustion)
Victims skin may be hot and dry (classic heat exhaustion)

More than 50 percent of those with heat stroke die, so if you suspect heat injury seek immediate medical attention.

Summer camps and other children’s program should actively attempt to prevent heat injury. Children should be provided with plenty of water. They should be allowed breaks to drink water at least every twenty minutes while exercising. However, water may not be enough to stay hydrated; electrolytic drinks such as Gartorade or coconut water should also be provided. Counselors should be trained to recognize the signs of heat injury and should be able to call for medical help when needed.

If your child is injured because his Kansas City sports camp or summer program did take adequate steps to prevent heat injury or because the camp did not provide adequate emergency care, you may have a Missouri child injury and neglect case. The Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys represents injured children throughout Missouri and Kansas.
