Halloween in Kansas City is just around the corner. Before little trick-or-treaters hit the streets in search of holiday fun and loads of candy, a review of Halloween safety tips ensures everyone will have a great time and make it home safe to enjoy the bounty. Factor safety into choosing a holiday activity like pumpkin-picking, hayrides, or corn mazes, by checking the venue's safety records before visiting, and instruct children to always follow the rules while participating in these types of activities. Thoroughly investigate the neighborhoods you plan to visit. Common sense will help keep children safe on Halloween night.
Costumes Concerns Halloween costumes need to be safe and free of hazards that could potentially turn a fun trick-or-treating night into a trip to the emergency room. Never wait until the night of fun and festivities to check for the right fit. Have adjustments made well before Halloween night. Costumes should fit well; anything that drags on the ground is a tripping hazard. Be sure that any costume you make or buy is made from flame retardant materials and always watch children near open flames, such a decorative jack-o-lantern displays with real candles inside. It is also advisable to have children wear costumes made from hypoallergenic materials to avoid unnecessary discomfort.
Make sure that any costume props are flexible and made from soft plastic. Hard plastic or metal swords, toy guns, pirate hooks, and other props can hurt little ones who may trip or fall. Large masks often impair a child's sight; avoid restricting a child's ability to look out for danger by using non-toxic makeup in place of a large mask.
Choose a treat bag that is lightweight and easy to carry. As the bag fills, it should be easy for a child to maneuver. Carry extra plastic shopping bags with you to help put excess candy into as you make the rounds. Be sure to have an extra bag for each child, this will keep each child's candy separate and avoid needless tears later.
Out and About Trick-or-treating should be safe and fun. Little trick-or-treaters should travel in groups accompanied by at least one adult. Flashlights for nighttime walkers are a must. Reflective tapes attached to costumes are a great idea for making little ghouls and boys more visible. Be sure that you visit only those places and neighborhoods that are known to you. Instruct children never to enter a home as they are trick-or-treating and to only visit houses that are well lit.
Reaching into the goodie bag to find a snack is a huge temptation for little ones. Keep a vigilant eye on small hands to ensure they do not find a treat before you have the chance to inspect it. Instead, carry a little bag of treats with you to dole out when children get antsy for a piece of candy.
Inspect candy before allowing children to indulge. You can do the inspecting in another room while your little tricksters get changed. Look over each piece individually in good light. Watch for loose fitting wrappers that appear to be rewrapped. Any treats with holes in the packaging, loose wrappers, signs of wear or age, or anything that simply stands out as suspicious should be tossed out. .
Alternatives to Trick-or-Treating Halloween does not necessarily have to mean trekking around neighborhoods. Many schools and church groups host trunk-or-treats, Halloween parties, or fall celebrations to keep young revelers safe. Many Kansas City businesses host Halloween activities as well.
