Helpful Tips to Prevent Childhood Injury

Preventable injuries claim the lives of more children every year than childhood cancers, respiratory ailments, and influenza. As a matter of fact, these injuries kill more children than all childhood illnesses put together. You can take steps to prevent injuries to your children.

Around the home

Accidents in the home account for hundreds of childhood deaths and injuries around the region. Taking proactive steps at home can keep your child safe, and you from spending money on emergency room visits. Most of these steps are common sense. Medicines, household cleaners, and other toxic materials should never be kept where a child can easily access them. Here are a few more things to watch out for around the house:

  • Keep all sharp objects up and out of the reach of small hands
  • Prevent burns by turning the temperature on your hot water heater down under 120°F
  • Be sure all areas of the house-that means each floor and bedroom- has a fully functional smoke alarm
  • In the kitchen, turn the handles of pots and pans on the stove inward. Keep hot liquids well out of reach
  • Electrical outlets must be covered, and electrical cords are secured away from reach

Small children

Babies and toddlers require extra care. Baby-proofing your home is a must for all parents of young children. Again, this is an exercise in common sense. Prevent falls by blocking stairs with wall mounted gates. Pressure gates are not safe and will lead to injury. Never place a small child in a walker. Always utilize the built in safety straps in high chairs, strollers, baby carriers, and car seats. Other preventative measures include:

  • Install window guards that will prevent openings higher than 4 inches
  • Cabinet doors and refrigerators should be fitted with child safety locks
  • Use newer baby furniture. Older furniture (made before 1986) poses numerous safety issues and should therefore be disposed of
  • Secure drapery cords high and out of baby's reach
  • Secure furniture with wall mounted screws
  • Keep small toys, coin money, and plastic shopping bags far away from small children to prevent choking and suffocation
  • Never give a small child a balloon to play with

Outdoors

Children love to run and play outdoors. When the temperatures rise, swimming pools in Kansas City and other attractions call to children. Unfortunately, the very things that promise to be the most fun to kids outside can be the most dangerous. Here are a few outdoor safety tips to consider:

  • Outdoor pools and trampolines must be fenced in to prevent accidental drowning
  • Remove outdoor buckets and pails from reach. Children can drown in just an inch of water
  • Always watch children closely around ponds, ditches, and other outdoor water sources
  • Watch children closely on porches and decks
  • Swing sets and other outdoor play areas can pose dangers as well. Never leave children unattended

If your child is injured because of an unsafe play area after first seeking medical attention you should contact authorities to report the danger immediately. If you then decide to seek legal counsel or advice, please contact our experienced personal injury attorneys in Kansas City at 888-348-2616 to schedule a free consultation.
