4 Children Dead; 2 Million Strollers Recalled. Learn Why Your Stroller May Not Be Safe.
Two million strollers manufactured by the popular brand Graco have been recalled. These strollers have been blamed for four defective consumer product deaths.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on Wednesday, October 20. It applies to Graco Quattro Tour strollers manufactured before November 2006, and MetroLite strollers manufactured before July 2007. The strollers in the current recall were sold between November 2000 and December 2007.
The strollers are blamed for four infant wrongful deaths from strangulation between 2003 and 2005. The strollers have also been blamed for injuries to six babies. Five infants sustained cuts and bruises after being trapped in strollers; one infant had difficulty breathing. How did these wrongful deaths and injuries occur?
The injuries occurred because small children, especially babies under 12 months, can slip through the opening between the stroller tray and the bottom of the seat. The opening is big enough for the infant's torso, but not big enough for the infant's head, so babies are caught at the neck. How do I know if my stroller has been recalled?

What should I do if my child was injured by a defective consumer product?
Graco has recalled several children's products this year. In January, Graco recalled 1.5 million strollers because the canopy hinge amputated the fingertips of five children. In March, 1.2 million high chairs were recalled because they could cause injury by tipping over. In April, 217,000 cribs were recalled for risk of strangulation.
Graco and other companies that manufacture children’s products have the responsibility to ensure the products are safe for the children who use them. If your child has been injured by a children’s product, you have a right to be angry. You also have a right to compensation for your child’s injuries and related expenses.
