Holiday Driving: Protect Yourself from Kansas City Drunk Drivers
Drunk driving rates increase dramatically in the days between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Last year 753 people were killed by holiday drunk drivers in the month of December. In Kansas and Missouri, law enforcement officials are cracking on drunk drivers. But, you can protect yourself by watching for signs of drunk driving and driving defensively.
Common signs of drunk driving:
• Making turns with a wide radius. • Straddling the center of the road or lane marker. • Drinking in the vehicle • Near accidents: almost striking an object or other vehicle. • Weaving or zigzagging across the road. • Driving anywhere other than a designated roadway. • Swerving or abruptly turning away from a generally straight course. • Turning abruptly. • Illegal turns. • Wrong way driving. • Driving slower than 10 mph below speed limit. • Speeding • Stopping without cause in a traffic lane. • Inappropriate stopping • Drifting or moving in a straight-line at a slight angle to the roadway. • Erratic braking. • Driving across traffic. • Signaling that is inconsistent with driving actions. • Slow or delayed response to traffic signals.
If you suspect another driver is drunk, be prepared to take quick, evasive action. Keep your distance from the vehicle or pull over and let the driver pass you. If the car is headed towards you, pull to the right side of the road and stop, then honk your horn and flash your lights.
Once you are safe, dial 911 or *SP to report the drunk driver to law enforcement officials. Tell the operator that you want to report a suspected drunk driver and give her your location and a description of the vehicle. Your call may save another driver’s life.
Don’t attempt to follow or stop the vehicle and don’t try to detain the drunk driver if they stop. People under the influence of alcohol can be unpredictable and may try to harm you. Don’t let the drunk driver distract you from your own driving.
