What Can You Do To Prevent Kansas City Drunk Driving Accidents?

New Year’s Eve is traditionally the night that there are the most drunk driving accidents. But, you can help prevent drunk driving crashes.

In 2009, 10,839 Americans were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving a driver who was legally intoxicated with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. This represents an average of one fatality every 50 minutes.

Nationally, drunk driving rates are decreasing. Alcohol-related driving fatalities decreased nearly ten percent last year from 11,711 deaths in 2008, and 49 percent from a high of 21,113 deaths in 1982, the year NHTSA first began keeping these statistics. Designated drivers are part of the reason for the decrease.

It is estimated that designated drivers have saved almost 50,000 lives and prevented thousands of injuries. Each year over 73,000,000 Americans either serve as a designated driver or are driven home by one.

A designated driver is an individual who agrees to abstain from drinking alcohol and be responsible for driving those who do drink home. Many establishments provide free non-alcoholic beverages and snacks to designated drivers. Becoming a designated driver is a great way to prevent drunk driving accidents and to protect the lives of your friends and others.

Tips for designated drivers:

• Plan ahead whenever you are going to socialize with alcohol beverages.

• Decide ahead of time who will be the designated driver and will not drink any alcohol before or during the party or event.

• Consider taking turns being the designated driver.

• Large groups should have more than one designated driver.

Another way to prevent Kansas City drunk driving accidents is to take the car keys from your intoxicated friends to prevent them from becoming drunk drivers. Of course, this may not be easy. Your friend may be determined to drive. Here are some hints on how to get the keys from a drunk person:

• Make a suggestion privately that they've had too much to drink and it would be better if someone else drove them home or if they took a cab or other transportation. Offer to find them a ride.

• Stay calm and make a joke about it.

• Make it clear that you're doing the drunk person a favor, not trying to stop him.

• Locate their keys while they're preoccupied and take them away. Chances are, they will think they've lost them and will be forced to accept another mode of transportation.

• Never ride with someone who is intoxicated.

Have a safe and happy New Year!
