Drunk Driving Deaths: Many Missouri Drunk Drivers Are Repeat Offenders.
In 2008, 11,773 Americans lost their lives in drunk driving accidents. In Missouri, 364 people were killed. In Kansas, there were 152 drunk driving deaths. The sad thing is that every single drunk driving death is preventable.
The same year, 12,000 individuals were arrested for drunk driving in Kansas and 31,000 drunk drivers were arrested in Missouri. Nationwide, nearly half of the 1,500,000 people arrested for drunk driving each year are repeat drunk drivers. Many of these drivers have been convicted and are driving on a suspended or revoked license. In fact, it is estimated that 50 to 70 percent of drivers who have their licenses revoked for driving while under the influence continue to drive; some even drive away from the courthouse after having their licenses revoked.
Statistics show that a driver who has one or more DWI convictions is 1.4 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than a driver without a drunk driving conviction. Drivers convicted of alcohol-impaired driving within three years are at least 1.8 times more likely to be in a fatal crash than drivers with no drunk driving convictions for the same time period. And, these drivers are four times as likely to be involved in fatal crashes in with high BACs of 0.10 percent or more. Many repeat DUI offenders are later caught with a BAC greater than .15 percent.
In both Missouri and Kansas the legal limit for intoxication is .08 BAC. Drivers who are convicted of driving drunk face criminal charges, fines and jail time.
Drunk drivers who cause serious injury and wrongful death may face civil charges as well as criminal charges.
