Later school days may prevent Kansas City teen car accidents.

A new study suggests that starting the school day later in the morning may prevent Kansas City teenage traffic accidents.

The study, which was conducted by researchers at the Division of Sleep Medicine at Eastern Virginia medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, found an association between earlier class times and more crashes among sleep-deprived high school students.

The researchers compared crash rates at two Virginia high schools in adjacent cities with similar demographics. One school started classes at 7:20 a.m. The other school did not start classes until 8:40 a.m.

The accident rate was higher in the first school. The city with an early school starting time had a student crash rate of 65.4 crashes per 1,000 teen drivers. In the city with the later start time, the rate was only 46.2 crashes per 1,000 teen drivers. This is a 41 percent difference.

Researchers believe that the students who had the earlier classes are sleep deprived and the lack of sleep contributed to the increase in car accidents. The author of the study explained that teenagers are “biologically programmed” to stay up later than adults. It is difficult for a teenager to go to sleep at 10 p.m. However, teens require about ten hours of sleep per night. Waking up early can cause sleep deprivation.

A similar study done in Lexington, Kentucky found that crash rates declined dramatically when teens get more sleep.

Teenage traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 16 and 18. In 2008, 195 Missouri teens died in traffic accidents. Sixty-seven Kansas teens were killed in the same year. Federal data shows that drowsy driving causes about 56,000 car crashes a year. These crashes result in at least 40,000 injuries and 1,550 fatalities. To learn more about the dangers of drowsy driving, click here.
