Ischemic Stroke- When Time Means Everything

Ischemic stroke affects 80 percent of all stroke victims. Strokes occur when the supply of blood and oxygen is interrupted to a part of the brain. Ischemic stroke refers to strokes that occur when a blood clot blocks an artery. Kansas City patients should know the risks and the symptoms of strokes.

Stroke symptoms include the following:

1. Weakness or a numbing sensation on one side of the body

2. Confusion, slurred speech

3. Changes in eyesight, double vision, or total loss of vision

4. Sudden balance problems, coordination issues and trouble walking

5. Vertigo

6. Confusion, unconsciousness

If these symptoms appear, patients should seek medical attention immediately. Time is essential to the recovery of a stroke victim. In fact, there is a saying used to describe the importance. "Time equals brain" refers to the fact that the quicker the patient is treated for the stroke, the better the likelihood of recovery. In fact, some treatments must be administered within a certain time frame. One very promising treatment is called tissue plasminogen activator (TPA), which can prevent many harmful effects of stroke. In order for it to be effective, the patient must be given the treatment within three hours. After that three hour mark, TPA can actually be harmful.

When the stroke is actually a hemorrhagic stroke, using TPA can make the affects of the stroke, including bleeding on the brain, worse for the patient. For this reason, it is imperative that emergency room doctors and other medical personnel carefully assess each patient presenting with stroke symptoms.

The good news is that with the right treatment, the devastating results of a stroke can be reversed. The most important factor in preventing permanent damage to the patient is to beat the clock and treat the stroke before that precious time window closes. When doctors fail to recognize the seriousness of a patient's symptoms, precious time is lost and the result can be irreversible, life altering results. Sometimes those results are as serious as death.
