Cervical Sprain/Cervical Strain: Evaluation and Treatment

Cervical strain, sometimes referred to as whiplash injury, is a very common injury encountered in today’s world, certainly including Missouri and Kansas. This is a neck injury that occurs within the soft tissues. The usual cause of whiplash is a spontaneo us and unexpected backward movement of the neck and a similar movement going forward. Cervical strain often develops during a rear–end car accident or car crash. The strongest symptom indicating cervical strain is neck pain but stiffness, headaches and dizziness, tingling in the upper back or shoulders, and difficulty swallowing or chewing are also common signs of this injury.

Some instances of cervical strain or whiplash can be quite serious and an extensive array of tests may be necessary to diagnose it. A physical examination may also be accompanied by CAT scans or MRIs in order to determine the nature and the extent of the damage done to the soft tissues in the spine, and an x-ray may also be performed on the patient in order to check for fractures in the spine.

There are a variety of treatments available for whiplash depending to some degree on the severity of the incident in question and injuries and resulting symptoms. Pain medication and other forms of medicine are commonly prescribed, and physical therapy may also be recommended to the patient by his or her physician in an effort to strengthen muscles that were weakened due to the injury. If these treatments are not sufficient to resolve the cervical strain or whiplash, further treatments may include trigger point injections, cervical traction, and possibly even surgical options, once again depending on the particular case.

Injuries to the neck and back are a very serious matter, and if left untreated, or treated inappropriately, may lead to serious complications. In any situation where you think it’s possibly you may have suffered a cervical sprain, it is recommended that you contact a physician or a pain specialist in a timely manner to for diagnosis of your injury and to explore the treatment options available.
