Hurt Report: Part 3 – Who Is At Risk In Kansas City Motorcycle Accidents?
The paper “Motorcycle Accident Cause Factors and Identification of Countermeasures" is known as “The Hurt Report”. It is the only comprehensive study ever done about the causes of motorcycle accidents on American roads and highways. The study was directed by Dr. Hugh H. Hurt at the University of Southern California in 1979. Although, 30 years have passed since the study was published, its findings remain relevant.
The Hurt report was so detailed, that the findings must be split into several articles. In this article, I will describe the findings that describe those who are most likely to become victims of motorcycle accidents.
Findings from the Hurt Report
1. Motorcyclists between the ages of 16 and 24 are significantly more likely to be involved in accidents than riders in other age groups.
2. Motorcyclists between the ages of 30 and 50 are significantly less likely to be involved in accidents than riders in other age groups.
3. Female motorcyclists are overrepresented in motorcycle accident statistics.
4. Motorcyclists who have had previous recent traffic citations or accidents are more likely to be involved in a motorcycle accident.
5. Motorcyclists who had no license, no motorcycle license or a revoked license are overrepresented in accident data.
6. Training prevents motorcycle accidents. Ninety two percent of riders involved in accidents are self-taught motorcyclists or motorcyclists who learned from family/friends.
7. Experienced motorcyclists are more likely to wear helmets.
8. More than half of motorcyclists involved in crashes have had less than 5 months of motor cycle riding experience.
9. Motorcyclists who have no license, no motorcycle license or a revoked license are overrepresented in accident data.
10. Training prevents motorcycle accidents. Ninety two percent of riders involved in accidents are self-taught motorcyclists or motorcyclists who learned from family/friends.
11. Experienced motorcyclists are more likely to wear helmets.
12. More than half of motorcyclists involved in crashes have had less than 5 months of motor cycle riding experience.
13. Alcohol use is a factor in almost half of fatal motorcycle accidents. Motorcycle riders who have been drinking have difficulty avoiding collisions even if they are not the main cause of the accident.
Taking a motorcycle training class offered by a local or state police department or driving school was found to be an important factor in reducing one’s risk of becoming a victim of a Kansas City motorcycle crash. These classes give a motorcyclist the skills needed to avoid collisions and prevent motorcycle accidents.
