Twelve Tips for Choosing A Motorcycle Helmet

Are you looking for a new motorcycle helmet? Don’t make this decision lightly.

Head injury is the leading cause of death in motorcycle accidents. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcycle helmets provide the best protection from head injury for motorcyclists involved in traffic crashes. A good motorcycle helmet may one day save your life.

There is no one best motorcycle helmet. Motorcycle helmets must fit the individual well in order to offer the best protection. The Kansas City Motorcycle crash attorneys at Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys offer these tips to help you choose the best motorcycle helmet for you.

1. Do not buy a helmet without trying it on.

2. Try on several helmets

3. Choose a helmet that fit snugly all the way around.

4. Make sure it is comfortable. Discomfort can be distracting and distraction can lead to accidents.

5. If you can, ask to try the helmet for 30-40 minutes while you take a motorcycle ride to see if it remains comfortable while riding a bike.

6. While you are riding, check the ventilation in the helmet. Make sure that ventilation is adequate and does not interfere with your vision.

7. Check that the helmet does not interfere with peripheral or side vision

8. Choose a helmet with strong straps and two D rings to fasten them. Snap fasteners can unsnap in an accident. Make sure that the chin strap is comfortable and has padding to prevent chafing or irritation.

9. Remember, being seen is the best way to prevent motorcycle accidents. Choose a helmet that is a bright color such as red, white, yellow or orange.

10. Consider a helmet made of a reflective material or one that has reflective tape on the back and sides.

11. Do not purchase a helmet that has defects such as cracks, loose padding, frayed straps or exposed metal. It may be on sale, but saving money is not as important as protecting yourself.

12. Look for the "Snell" approval sticker inside; the Snell Memorial Foundation puts helmets through rigorous safety tests and has more stringent requirements than DOT-only or ECE 22.05 helmet certifications.
