Do Kansas City Motorcyclists Have Insurance Requirements?

Yes. Motorcyclists in Missouri and Kansas are required to carry motorcycle insurance. In both states, motorcyclists must carry the same coverage as drivers of other motor vehicles. The motorcycle insurance must meet the following minimum requirements:

Liability Coverage

• Bodily injury liability maximum for one person injured in an accident: $25,000
• Bodily injury liability maximum for all injuries in one accident: $50,000
• Property-damage liability maximum for one accident: $10,000

Uninsured/Underinsured Insurance Coverage

The law also requires a motorcyclist to have uninsured motorist coverage of $25,000 for bodily injury per person and $50,000 for bodily injury per accident.

Personal Injury Protection or No-Fault Insurance

In Missouri, personal injury protection (PIP or no-fault) is not required.

In Kansas, Personal injury protection is required by law. Motorcyclists must have a minimum of:

• $4,500 per person for medical expenses
• $900 per month for one year for disability/loss of income
• $25 per day for in-home services
• $2,000 for funeral, burial or cremation expense
• $4,500 for rehabilitation expense
• Survivor Benefits: Disability/loss of income up to $900 per month for one year
• In-home services up to $25 per day for one year
• $25,000/person
• $50,000/accident

If you are injured in a Kansas City motorcycle accident and have no insurance coverage, your license may be suspended. You will need to pay a fine and show proof of insurance before your license can be reinstated. If you are at fault in the motorcycle crash, you must settle out of pocket for all damages before your motorcycle license can be reinstated.
