Truck Drivers Who Have No Business behind the Wheel

Most truck drivers on the road a hard working, well qualified men and women who drive with pride in their work. Many of these drives work long and hard hours to put food on the table at home while they keep America running on 18 wheels. Once in a while, however, a bad apple slips into the fleet creating potentially hazardous conditions on Kansas and Missouri roadways.

While most trucking companies screen their drivers carefully before putting them behind the wheel of an 80,000 pound load, some companies are less than honest in their hiring policies. Drivers with no business hauling loads on the open road may make their way through the hiring process anyway, endangering the lives of anyone they share the road with.

It takes time, effort, and money to hire qualified trucking professionals. Some companies are even going so far as to place people behind the wheel without proper certification and training. The economy is tough these days and no one has been spared its effects, but trucking companies who place the safety of others in jeopardy by recruiting and hiring dangerous drivers are doing no one any favors.

As a minimum, hiring policies should address the following:

1. Past moving violations, driving record, suspensions, etc.

2. Drug use and driving under the influence convictions.

3. Job history, especially drug and alcohol problems on the job.

4. Criminal history of any kind.

5. Accusations of “snowing” or falsifying driver’s logs.

6. Presence of medical conditions that would inhibit the driver’s ability to safely operate a truck.

7. Spotty work history.

Negative results after inquiry on any of these criteria should throw up red flags and call for further scrutiny. Some of the criteria should signal a deal-breaker policy. Drug or alcohol use while behind the wheel? Automatic “no’ in the hiring process. What about falsifying logs? Another major issue and one bound to get the driver blacklisted from reputable trucking companies.

Why would a trucking company take a chance on a questionable driver? The question is perplexing. Given the potential fallout for the company, both in terms of financial responsibility and criminal charges It seems to stare reason in the face.
