Acquired brain injury can devastate a family. Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys can help.
Each year, an approximately 2 million Americans sustain a brain injury. Most brain injuries are mild, and the symptoms usually disappear over time if the victim receives proper medical attention. Other brain injuries are severe and may result in permanent, life-altering disability. About 500,000 to 750,000 brain injuries each year are severe enough to require extensive hospitalization.
What is acquired brain injury?
Aquired brain injury is a term referring to damage to the brain that is acquired after birth. The damage may be the result of an external physical force such as a blow to the head from a Kansas City car crash or it may come from internal causes such as a stroke. The damage may result in an impairment of cognitive, emotional, and/or physical functioning. The impairments may be either temporary or permanent. They can cause partial or total functional disability or psychological problems.
Types of acquired brain injury:
•Concussion
•Contusion
•Skull fracture
•Hematoma
•Stroke
•Oxygen deprivation
Concussion
A concussion is an injury that results from a blow to the head that causes the brain to strike the skull. A concussion does not cause any structural damage to the brain, but the injury can cause temporary loss of functioning.
Common symptoms of concussions:
•Headache
•Nausea
•Dizziness
•Irritibility
Contusion
A contusion is a more serious blow to the brain that results in bruising of the brain. There may be a noticeable loss of functions. Symptoms include:
•Weakness
•Lack of motor coordination
•Numbness
•Aphasia (difficulty speaking)
•Memory problems
•Cognitive problems
Contusions require intensive medical treatment as swelling of the brain can cause further damage.
Skull Fracture
A skull fracture is a head injury results in damage to the skin and bone of the skull as well as to the brain itself. Many skull fractures result in mild to severe problems associated with daily functioning such as walking, memory, vision and behavior, but symptoms depend on the location and severity of the fracture. Skull fractures require close medical observation and follow up treatment after release from the hospital.
Hematoma
A hematoma forms when blood collects in the brain. A hematoma may occur between the skull and the covering of the brain (epidural) or may occur between the membrane covering the brain and the brain itself (subdural). Hematomas may require surgery.
Symptoms include:
•Increasing headache
•Vomiting
•Drowsiness and progressive loss of conciousness
•Dizziness
•Confusion
•Pupils of unequal size
•Weakness in limbs on one side of your body
•Increased blood pressure
When an accident victim is diagnosed with a brain injury, it affects the whole family. An injured child may need more attention and a parent might have to leave work to provide care. Or, if an adult is injured, the family may suffer because of the loss of income.
