New Missouri law will allow official memorial signs for drunk driving victims.

A new Missouri law will allow families to apply for an official memorial sign to be placed at the site of a loved one’s drunk driving death.

The legislation is called David’s Law after David Poenicke, a Missouri drunk driving victim who was killed in 1984 on Interstate 270 neat St. Louis. The signs cost $600 and families of DUI victims must fill out an application with the state. They say “Drink Driving Victim! Think About It!” and are printed with the victim’s initials and date of death. Full names are prohibited in order to protect the families of DWI victims.

The signs are designed to be a safer, long term replacement for the homemade roadside memorials one sees along Missouri highways. Those memorials are technically not legal, but MoDoT workers leave those memorials alone unless they pose a safety hazard. The signs will be maintained by MoDoT for a period of ten years.

In 2008, 364 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes on Missouri highways. Thousands more were injured.

Victims of Missouri DWI accidents have the right to seek compensation for any injuries sustained during the accident as well as restitution for lost wages, pain and suffering and property damage. In many cases victims of Missouri drunk driving accidents may also seek punitive damages. Punitive damages refer to monetary compensation awarded to the victim that go beyond compensation for their injuries and losses, instead these damages are intended to punish the drunk driver for his reckless actions.

If you or a loved one is a victim of a Kansas City drunk-driving accident, neither a sign nor a lawsuit can make up for the damage the drunk driver has done. But, financial compensation can help heal physical injuries and getting accountability can help with the emotional healing process.
