Until recently, salesmen typically promoted the environmental and economical benefits of hybrid vehicles. While they will certainly continue to do so, you can now expect an additional topic to be prominently featured in the sales pitch. This new selling point is likely to be the safety features of hybrids.
The Safety Benefits of Hybrid Vehicles
In November 2011, the Highway Loss Data Institute issued the results of its first ever report about hybrid car safety and the results were significant. Specifically, the Institute found that drivers of hybrid vehicles were 25% less likely to be injured in a crash than drivers of conventional cars. One of the primary reasons for the increased safety, according to the Institute, is that hybrid vehicles tend to be about 10% heavier than typical vehicles.
Safety Concerns Associated with Hybrid Cars
While there may be some safety benefits to hybrid cars, such as those described by the Highway Loss Data Institute, there are also some safety concerns. Specifically, there is some concern that the batteries used in some hybrid models may be more prone to catch fire in a crash. Additionally, there is concern about how quietly the vehicles run on electric power. The quietness makes it difficult for pedestrians to hear oncoming traffic and may pose a safety hazard. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been given three years by Congress to require hybrids and electric cars to have a sound alert system to warn pedestrians of their approach.
