Two-thirds Of Teens Have Had Near Accidents: Learn Why You Should Discuss A New Survey About Teen Driving With Your Child.

Has your teen driver been in a Kansas City accident? What about a near-accident? You may be surprised.

In a recent survey sponsored by Liberty Mutual Insurance and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), 68% of teens surveyed said they had narrowly avoided a crash in the past year.

The study included more than 2300 high school students from 28 high schools across the country. The students were asked about accidents and near accidents.

  • 11% of teens had been in an accident in the past year
  • 68% of teens had been in a near-accident
  • 56% of teen drivers had been involved in more than one near-accident

Who did the teens blame for the near misses? More than half (55%) of the teens surveyed said that other drivers or bad weather caused the near-crash. However, a different picture emerged when the students were questioned about their activity at the time.

  • 86% were talking
  • 61% were changing songs on portable music players
  • 47% had three or more passengers in their vehicle
  • 36% were talking on cell phones
  • 36% were texting

Why does this matter?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), teen drivers are four times more likely to be involved in a Kansas City accident than adult drivers. In 2009, 3,000 teens died in car crashes and 350,000 were treated for injuries. Nearly 20% of these accidents were caused by distracted driving; another 21% were caused by speeding.
