Take down the names and phone numbers of people who are willing to verify what happened. Securing witnesses may be a great help to you if there is a dispute with the other driver. A good tip is to secure independent witnesses; your passengers may not carry as much objectivity as a bystander.
• 3. A picture is worth a thousand words. If you have a camera on your cell phone, flip it open and take pictures of the damage. You can also snap pertinent photos of the parking lot surrounding the accident. This may help answer questions and reconstruct the scene if there is a question later.
• 4. Call the police. Even if the parking lot is on private property, you may need a police report number in order to file an insurance claim later. Again, this may be necessary to help you document your side of the story.
• 5. Call your insurance company and alert them to what has taken place. Even if you do not file a claim in the end, it is important to alert your agent. Nationally, nearly 15 percent of motorists are uninsured. Your policy may have a clause that will provide you with protection for uninsured motorists. Placing a call to your agent may help get the ball rolling.
