Important Boating Accident Facts

Every year, numerous families in Kansas and Missouri find fun in the sun and incomparable family time boating around local lakes and rivers. Boating is a recreational activity with which few summertime activities compare. Setting sail or jetting around on the water encompasses a sense of freedom the entire family can participate in. Whether the craft of choice is a sailboat or a large pontoon, the tradition of taking to the water is not going to change anytime soon.

With that in mind, Kansas City families would do well to remember a few important statistics. In 2009, 4,730 recreational boating accidents occurred in the United States according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Those accidents led to a sobering 736 deaths and another 3,358 people were injured as a result. Boating accidents nationwide cost a whopping 36 million dollars in property damage.

The Coast Guard also reported another disturbing statistic. Of the deaths that occurred in 2009, three-fourths were drowning deaths. Eighty-four percent of those drowning victims were not wearing life jackets. Most deaths occurred on smaller boats, less than 21 feet long. Additionally, it is noted that alcohol was a leading factor in many of the boating accident deaths. Other leading factors include operator error and excessive speed. On the flip side, only 14 percent of accidents happened on boats that involved an operator that had received safety training.

So, what should you do if you are involved in a boating accident? Report the accident to local law enforcement. Stay on the scene and follow official instructions. Report property damage and injuries to your insurance company without fail. You should also follow up and make sure the accident is reported to appropriate state agencies and the United States Coast Guard.Do not, however, offer a statement to any insurance officials without the advice of an attorney. Do not allow any statements to be recorded by an adjuster. Instead, take the insurance company's information and follow up later.

Teach young children the importance of boating safety at an early age. Insist on the use of life jackets anytime the boat is in use. Swimming classes and boating safety instruction are both good measures to take for the safety of everyone on board. And remember, never combine alcohol with the operation of a boat or watercraft of any type.
