Avoiding Missouri Car Accidents: Spring Car Maintenance Tips

It's been a long winter, but spring is finally here. Just as you clean the ravages of winter out of your backyard, you need to clean the wear and tear of winter driving from your car. Here are is a spring checklist to help you make sure your car is safe to drive before you hit the road:

1. If you use snow tires, it's time to take them off and change back to your regular tires.

2. All-season tires should be rotated as winter weather create uneven wear on tires. This is important; uneven wear can make driving on wet spring roads dangerous.

3. Your wiper blades got a workout clearing snow, ice and slush from your windshield. Check them for wear and replace them if they are worn.

4. Salt on the road can affect your breaks. Spring is a good time to get your brakes checked, especially if you hear any of the following:
  • Grinding
  • Squealing
  • Screeching
  • Chatter

5. Change the oil. Some people use thinner oil for winter. As the weather warms, it is time to change back to heavier oil.

6. After you change the oil, check all fluids to make sure they're topped up. In the winter months, your engine works harder, so fluids are used faster.

7. Check your windshield wiper fluid. Grimy winter windshields can use a lot of fluid, make sure you have enough to clean off the spring mud.

8. Wash your car. Washing off the salt and mud will keep your car from rusting. Don't forget to wash underneath - the underbody and the insides of the front and rear bumpers can also be damaged by salt build-up. Use a high-pressure hose or garden hose

9. Don't forget to clean inside. If you're in a car crash, the clutter in your car will be thrown around the cabin. Even a tissue box can cause serious injury if it is travelling at 60 miles per hour.

10. Apply a protectant to your vinyl surfaces to prevent cracking, sun damage and fading in the coming months.

Preventative maintenance will keep your car operating smoothly and safely.
