CPSC announces massive recall of drop-side cribs: Is your baby safe?

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced the voluntary recall of over two million drop-side cribs made by seven different manufacturers.

The recalled cribs were sold by numerous retailers throughout the United States, including WalMart, BabiesRUs, Sears and USA Baby. The cribs were manufactured between 2000 and 2009. They are responsible for 32 fatalities and hundreds of near deaths of other injuries caused when a child was suffocated or strangled in an accident related to or caused by a drop-side detachment. The CPSC received reports of 14 additional deaths caused by entrapment that may be related to the drop-side.

If you own one of these cribs, you can contact the retailer or manufacturer for a free repair kit that will mobilize the drop side. Do not attempt to fix the crib yourself.

Manufacturers who are recalling cribs include:

Child Craft – Child Craft brand drop-side cribs, Child Craft brand "Crib ‘N' Double Bed" full size stationary-side cribs with dowel
Delta Enterprise Corporation – All Delta drop-side cribs
Evenflo – Jenny Lind Cribs
Jardine Enterprises – All Jardine drop-side cribs
LaJobi - Bonavita, Babi Italia and ISSI drop-side cribs
Million Dollar Baby - Includes Million Dollar Baby, Baby Mod and DaVinci cribs
Simmons Juvenile Products Inc. – Simmons Easy Side Drop-side cribs

Drop-side cribs are convenient, but they are not as structurally sound as cribs with four fixed sides. Many of the wrongful deaths occurred when the drop-side suddenly detached. In other cases, the death occurred after the consumer tried to fix a detached side or when the consumer installed the drop-side or drop-side hardware in correctly. In many of these incidents, the crib appeared to function as intended.

Death or child injury may occur when the infant or toddler rolls into the space created by the partially detached drop-side or becomes wedged between the drop-side and the mattress.

The CPSC is working on new safety standards for cribs. The new standards should be completed by the end of the year.

Crib manufacturers have a responsibility to provide safe products. If your child has been injured or killed by a defective crib, you have a right to be upset.
