Ankle Fractures: Symptoms and Treatment

Ankle injuries can be very painful for Kansas City residents. In 2003, approximately 1.2 million people sought treatment in emergency rooms across the United States for ankle injuries. Ankle sprains, twists, fractures, and other injuries are difficult to tell apart without proper medical diagnosis. Ankle fractures come in many different forms. It is therefore necessary to consult a physician if you experience pain, swelling, and bruising following an injury.

Description

The ankle consists of three bones. Above the ankle joint sits the tibia, also called the shin bone. The fibula also sits above the ankle joint. Located below the ankle is the talus. Most ankle fractures affect the tibia and the fibula. Ankle fractures range from a single break affecting one bone multiple fractures affecting some or all of the bones that make up the ankle joint. Fractures can also affect the three groups of ligaments that surround the joint and give it stability.

The tibia carries 90 percent of the weight on the ankle. The fibula only bears 10 percent of the weight. Fractures that involve the tibia make it nearly impossible to continue to get around on the ankle once it is injured. Ankle fractures can happen in many different forms and must therefore be treated individually.

Symptoms

The most obvious symptom of an ankle fracture is pain. Additionally, swelling, deformity and bruises, as well as the inability to put weight on the affected ankle can indicate a fracture. Other symptoms include swelling around the joint, pain in the knees or other areas, bruising, deformities from protruding bone. Numbness, pale skin around the injury, and lack of movement in the foot or the toes can be signs of nerve damage. Any suspicion of an ankle fracture requires immediate medical attention.

Causes

Tripping or falling can lead to a broken ankle. Ankle fractures can occur from rotating the ankle in an unnatural way. Ankle fractures may also result from an automobile accident. Medical evaluation is necessary to determine the scope of the injury and needed treatment.

Treatments

Beginning with an x-ray performed in the emergency room or doctor's office, treatment decisions are based on the severity and complexity of the fracture. If it is determined that surgery is not required, a splint may be placed on the broken ankle in the emergency room. The splint will remain in place for a few days, giving the ankle a chance to expand in the event of further swelling. Later, a cast may be applied to the ankle and remain in place for several weeks. Crutches are used in order to keep weight off of the ankle. The doctor will determine the length of time that crutches will be used based on the severity of the fracture.

Surgery for ankle fractures may be required if the ankle cannot regain alignment without it. Alignment of the ankle is a paramount concern for correct healing. Arthritis is a common complication following an ankle fracture; correct alignment can reduce the likelihood of developing the condition.

Ankle fractures occur in 184 people out of every 100,000. A fractured ankle due to a slip and fall accident can result in medical expenses, lost wages, and a painful recovery period.
