Each year, more than one-third of all American adults over the age of 65 are injured in a slip and fall accident. Falls are the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and of hospital admissions for trauma among the elderly.
Each year, more than 1.5 million seniors were treated in emergency departments for fall-related injuries and nearly 400,000 are hospitalized
For elderly adults, slip and fall accidents can be very dangerous. More than one-fifth of falls involving persons over age 65 cause serious injury. A fall can result in a head injury, spine injury, hip fracture or even death. Falls are the leading cause of injury death in the elderly. Seventy-five percent (12,000) of slip and fall deaths involve victims over the age of 75.
Hip fractures are a common and dangerous injury among the elderly. In 2004, there were more than 320,000 hospital admissions for hip fractures. Ninety-percent of these were caused by falls. Of all fall-related fractures, hip fractures are most likely to lead to sever health problems, loss of quality of life or death. Most patients with hip fractures are hospitalized for about one week, but require additional care for up to a year. An adult age 75 years and older who has been injured in a slip or fall is four to five times more likely to be admitted to a long-term care facility than an adult who has not sustained injury
One-quarter of patients who sustain hip fractures die within six months.
How can hip fractures be prevented?
The best way to prevent hip fractures is to prevent falls. Fall prevention strategies include:
1. Regular exercise.
2. Having a doctor review the patient’s medications for side-effects and interactions that can effect vision and balance.
3. Yearly eye exams.
4. Reducing fall hazards in the home by removing clutter, loose rugs and other obstacles.
5. Use non-slip mats in the bath tub and shower.
6. Install grab bars or rails next to the toilet and in the tub or shower.
7. Have handrails on stairways.
8. Make sure the home is well lit.
