Are outpatient surgical centers spreading infections?

A federal survey of outpatient surgical centers in three states found that many of these centers are not taking enough precautions to protect patients from potentially dangerous infections.

Outpatient surgical centers, same day surgery centers or ambulatory surgical centers are medical facilities where surgical procedures that do not require an overnight hospital stay are performed. There are currently more than five thousand such centers across the United States, including several right here in Kansas City. Approximately 75 percent of all surgeries including knee, shoulder, eye, spine and other surgeries are performed in outpatient surgical centers. Diagnostic tests such as colonoscopies are also routinely conducted in ambulatory surgery centers.

Researchers at the centers for Disease Control surveyed 68 ambulatory surgical centers in Maryland, North Carolina and Oklahoma. The researchers found that nearly 70 percent of these centers had lapses in infection control and 20 had medication administration lapses. More than half of the centers in the survey had been cited by state officials for deficiencies in hospital infection control. The results were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Researchers looked at five areas for infection control:

Hand hygiene
Injection safety and medication handling
Equipment reprocessing
Environmental cleaning
Handling of blood glucose monitoring equipment

The most common lapses included:

Using single-dose medication vials for more than 1 patient (28.1%)
Failing to follow recommended practices regarding reprocessing of equipment (28.4%)
Lapses in handling of blood glucose monitoring equipment (46.3%)

Unfortunately, such lapses can be fatal especially to a patient whose immune system is already weakened by illness. Improper hygiene can lead to hepatitis, MRSA or even HIV.

It is a hospital’s responsibility to keep equipment and surroundings clean and germ-free. If you’re a loved one have sustained a serious infection after surgery at an outpatient surgical center, you may be a victim of Kansas medical malpractice or Missouri medical negligence.
